The new Newtons have arrived! Yes the highly anticipated Newton 5 lug series Gravity III and Motion III models came in a couple of weeks ago and I was excited to get a pair of my own to test out. First a little background, I started running in the original Newton 4 lug motion shoe a couple of years ago to help encourage me to be more of a mid-foot striker. After a few weeks of shorter runs I adapted to the lug feel, lower heel to toe drop and running posture and began to rotate the 4 lug model into my workouts. As I tell customers looking into Newton at the store just standing in the 4 lug system or running in them for the first time the lugs feel like a deck of cards under the ball of your foot. This is a very different feel than other shoes so it may or may not be a good fit for everyone. As for myself I always noticed the 4 lug system "deck of cards feel" but after a mile or so the feeling dissipated and was not as noticeable I liked the older 4 lug Newton.

Fast forward to today, Newton offers the Gravity III, which is a neutral shoe, and the Motion III which is a stability model. I recently received my new 5 lug Newton Gravitys III and after slipping them on immediately noticed that Newton opened up the toe box which was a welcome change and the wrap around of the upper was much nicer than previous models. The Gravity III is also lighter than it's predecessor weighing in at 8.9oz on the Ultimate Fit scale. But the highlight of the new model is the P.O.P " Point of Power" Action Reaction 5 lug system under the midfoot and heel. Newton decided to mimic your foots 5 metatarsals and added a fifth lug. Upon impact the lugs recess into a small cavity on the shoe and as you toe off add the famous Newton POP feeling. This also allows Newton to offer more cushioning than a traditional lightweight shoe may offer because they are able to use less material but still provide extra cush. On my first run in the gravity III I immediately noticed that the "deck of card feel" of the older 4 lug models had been replaced with a more supple and stable feel because of the new wider 5 lug platform which I fell in love with instantly. The low 3mm heel to toe drop along with the lugs help encourage more of a midfoot strike and with a small change in your current running posture and cadence really do help you become a more bio mechanically efficient runner. Newton helps to keep you safe in low light conditions with 360 degree reflectivity included on the highly breathable brightly colored Newton upper and by added semi flat laces, help keep you tied up out on your run.

Ultimate Fit employee and USI runner Austin Pryor did a 18 miler in his Gravity III's for his first run in them and was amazed at the comfort and ride. As for myself and others who have purchased the new Newtons, they are a home run, lighter, more comfortable and more stable than the past models and ready for any distance that you are.

Have a fun run,

THE COSMIC BATTLE OF THE STABILITY SHOE

THE TRANCE WAS ONCE BROOKS’ SHINING STAR OF CUSHIONING COMBINED WITH SUPPORT FOR THE MODERATE OVER PRONATOR, BUT ITS REPLACEMENT, THE TRANSCEND, BLASTS THROUGH THE RUNNING HEMISPHERE WITH SPACE-AGE TECHNOLOGY! ONCE A SEMI-TRADITIONAL STABILITY SHOE CONTAINING PLASTIC AND BROOKS’ BIO MOGO DNA, THE TRANSCEND WAS BUILT TO “MAXIMIZE THE FLOAT EXPERIENCE”. STURDY YET FLEXIBLE GUIDE RAILS FRAME THE SHOE, SUPPLYING “SUPPORT ON DEMAND” YET ALLOWING THE BODY TO MOVE INDEPENDENTLY. BROOKS SUPPLEMENTED THE TRANSCEND WITH WHAT THEY CALL THE “IDEAL HEEL”. THE HEEL IS ROUNDED AND THE MIDSOLE HAS A 6MM DROP, COMPARED TO THE 12MM HEEL-TO-TOE DROP OF THE TRANCE. THIS CHANGE ALLOWS THE RUNNER TO FEEL LESS IMPACT WHILE ENCOURAGING MORE OF A MIDFOOT STRIKE.

THE OUTSOLE OF THE TRANSCEND HAS A FUTURISTIC STRUCTURE THAT WILL SURPASS EXPECTATIONS! THE WIDER BASE CONTAINS WHAT BROOKS CALLS “IDEAL PRESSURE ZONES”. ITS UNIQUE SHAPE DISPERSES IMPACT EVENLY WITH DEEP FLEX GROOVES IN THE TREAD. THE SEGMENTED CRASH PAD ALONG THE OUTSOLE CONTOURS TO THE GROUND FOR FULL-CONTACT WHILE RUNNING. YOUR JOINTS WILL APPRECIATE THIS ENCOUNTER!
THE TRANSCEND DEFEATS ITS PREDECESSOR ON TERMS OF COMFORT AS WELL. NEW SUPER DNA OFFERS 25% MORE CUSHIONING THAN THE RETIRED TRANCE, AND THE PLUSH UPPER TOPS THE OLD MODEL WITH ITS SEAMLESS VELVETY INTERIOR. THE ROOMY TOEBOX IS SEAMLESS AND STREAMLINED, AND THE ATTACHED TONGUE CONTRIBUTES TO THE OVERALL FEEL.

BROOKS CREATED THE SLOGAN “RISE ABOVE THE RUN” FOR THE LAUNCH OF THIS NEW RUNNING SHOE, AND THAT SAYS IT ALL! THE TRANSCEND SPARKLES WITH ENERGY AND OVERTHROWS THE COMPETITION WITH ITS INNOVATIVE DESIGN. WHEN YOU’RE PREPARED TO MOVE PLANETS ON YOUR NEXT RUN, JUST MOON-WALK YOURSELF DOWN TO ULTIMATE FIT FOR A PAIR OF BROOKS TRANSCEND!

WED. FEB.19TH AT 5:45pm ULTIMATE FIT IS HAVING A BROOKS WEAR TEST EVENT FEATURING A 2-3 MILE FUN RUN WHERE YOU CAN ACTUALLY TRY A PAIR OF TRANSCENDS FOR YOURSELF. CALL THE STORE FOR DETAILS 812-431-0201

Want to lose weight?  Your dreams have come true with the new Wave Rider 17 from Mizuno!  This updated model has slimmed down to an average of 8.8 ounces (compared to the Rider 16 @ 9.3oz), providing the runner with a fluid, featherweight stride.  Mizuno is now using U4ic in the midsole, a new foam cushioning that is 30% lighter than the previous material.  They also redesigned their Wave plate (that crazy looking curved piece in the outsole featured on all Mizunos) using what they call Smooth Ride engineering.  This provides the wearer with the ultimate in cushioning and stability, and ensures that transitions in speed and tempo are effortless.  Another aspect of the Wave Rider 17 that confirms the stability of this neutral shoe is the beveled design of the lateral edge.  Not only does this create the perfect foundation for a neutral runner or a slight supinator like me, but the outsole tread has changed to yet another weightless substance: blown rubber!  This substance keeps the sole flexible yet firm in all the right ways.  Did I mention it was light-weight???
Losing weight is wonderful, but it means nothing if you don’t look or feel the part, right? Good thing the Mizuno Wave Rider 17 is now nearly seamless on the inside, with logo stitching traded out for the new heat-welded overlays.  The instep is soft and sleek, allowing for an easy, comfortable feel.  Mizuno doesn’t disappoint on terms of appearance, either.  Both the men’s and women’s shoe stay inspired by their Japanese heritage, and are available in a variety of crayon-happy colors.
So what does all this fun stuff mean?  If you’re in the market for a new pair of trainers that provide indulgence for your feet at an agreeable price, the Mizuno Wave Rider 17 might be the shoe for you.  A runner with a thick or wide-width foot could be deterred by the Rider’s weightlessness and somewhat narrow design, but for neutral runners with no serious pronation issues, this sneaker is perfect.  In other words, fat-free yet nutritious eye-candy for the feet!

Run like the wind,

The wait is over! After 3 years of designing, the new Saucony Guide 7 series is here. It offers light stability for the mild over pronator and even neutral runners looking for a little support in a light weight trainer. Looking back at the history of this model it has been Runners World shoe of the year and the Runner Retailers Association shoe of the year. With a pedigree like that, Saucony knew they couldn't disappoint with the new 7 and were determined to get it right. To begin with, the addition of Saucony’s new PowerGrid full length midsole is 15% lighter than the previous ProGrid midsole with the added bonus of being 30% more durable for extended wear.

Saucony added the flared forefoot designed to allow the forces of impact to be dispersed over a wider area, which was noticeable when I tested this model. Sauconys have always had a nice soft ride and the new Guide 7 doesn't disappoint. Midfoot cushion and toe spring in this new model are great. They have carried forward their 8mm midsole heel-to-toe drop, which positions the foot more naturally and encourages the foot to land more on the midfoot. Saucony started using this on the Guide 5 model a couple of years ago and it has been well received by many of our customers. All in all Saucony has upgraded this shoe nicely while only slightly increasing the price. So if you are a current Guide fan or someone looking to try out a new brand of trainers give the new Saucony Guide 7 a test run we think they are great!

Sorry guys, this one is for the ladies. The new Brooks Ariel 12 is a "go to shoe" for the walker or runner needing the ultimate in motion control for moderate to severe over pronation. We have many medical professionals refer their patients to us specifically for this shoe because of the great mix of stability, cushioning, comfort and a deep cut that easily accommodates orthotics. The heart of this shoe begins with its deep grooved BioMogo cushioned straight-lasted mid/outsole. A straight last works best for those with low arches and flat feet helping the over pronator to "toe off" with their big toe. The Ariel also features full length Brooks DNA gel cushioning that adapts to you, changing it's cushioning to be either softer or firmer depending on your needs.

Slipping inside the shoe you will notice that Brooks has included a seriously cushioned insole that sets on top of even more cushioning that is sewn into the foot bed. Starting to get the idea? An unbelievable stable shoe with major cushioning! Of course Brooks does not disappoint us with the comfort of the upper in the Ariel either. It features very light over lays, good ventilation and lots of sewn in cushioning in the tongue and heel for comfort. We have many ladies that come in and ask for this one by name because of their past experience with them. Come in and slide a pair on and see if you agree. I bet you will!

Have a fun run,

It's new but how could it get any better? The Brooks Glycerin 10 was such a home run shoe for most neutral to under pronators it is hard to imagine that Brooks would do much more than a color change for the new model. But the new Glycerin 11 series takes this model to a new level with new features including 3D Fit Print overlays on the upper to create structure, reduce weight and increase comfort. Sliding inside the shoe Brooks has removed seams and used a very plush and soft lining on the interior letting it snuggle your foot in total comfort. Cushioning in the midsole is achieved with the traditional Brooks DNA gel that adapts to every runner to provide the right amount of softness or firm support automatically. Brooks removed the mid foot shank to create a more flexible full contact outsole that offers a softer landing. This is in conjunction with their caterpillar design featuring deep flex grooves, which make a virtually flawless combination. In case you were wondering, they did update it with great new colors in both the men and women's models that really pop so you can look great while you glide down the road. We can't wait to slide a pair of these on your feet for you to experience the best Brooks has to offer!

May/June 2013
Another Newton! We just received our shipment of the 2013 Sir & Lady Isaac model shoes, another exciting model of Newtons we are stocking here at Ultimate Fit. While last month we reviewed the full-on Newton experience with the Motion and Gravity model this month we take a step down in the Newton experience to review the model that is known as the "transition" model Newton. What do I mean by "transition" model? It is a shoe that starts to give you some of the Newton benefits but is easier to jump into if you are currently in a traditional trainer and are a heel striker vs. the Motion or Gravity model. While there is more shoe here than some Newton models, these still weigh in at a reasonable 10.9oz and have a nice 4.5mm heel to toe drop in the midsole that helps promote a more efficient mid foot strike. Of course the Isaacs feature Newton’s action/reaction technology in the heel and mid foot where the 4 lugs upon impact recess into the midsole to offer cushioning and a springy rebound. The lugs on the Isaacs are less pronounced than on the higher performance Motion or Gravity models which helps the runner transition into the Newton technology easier but still give a very nice rolling forward effect. All of this plus a secure comfortable fitting upper along with good ventilation make this Newton a model that should be seriously considered the next time you are ready for shoes.

From Newton Running:

Newton running starts with good posture, an athletic position and continues with an efficient cadence of 170 to 190 steps/minute. Done properly, running feels easier and your feet seem at one with the ground. You are making better use of the proper running muscles and the elastic component of running. The end result is a run that feels more efficient, intuitive, relaxed, natural and less stressful. HELLO BETTER (Newtonrunning.com).

April 2013
The Newtons are here; say "Hello" to better running! Ultimate Fit is proud to announce that we are now the exclusive Newton running shoe dealer for Evansville. What is Newton? Newton is a shoe company that promotes "natural running" technique and they build their shoes just for this. The models we are featuring today are the Newton Gravity and Motion. The Gravity is the neutral version and the Motion offers some stability. At 9.3oz these shoes come in at a lower weight than some traditional trainers which is nice, but the big difference is in the heel & midfoot "action reaction" technology. Newton features 4 lugs in the mid-foot that recess into the shoe to soften impact and then superior rebounding during toe off. The 3mm heel to toe drop along with the lugs help to promote a mid-foot strike which helps you to absorb the impact forces better by allowing you to use your knees more like shock absorbers. I have a pair of these and after a short learning curve these shoes have become my number one choice for most of my runs. The forward roll-through effect of the mid-foot lugs is amazing. I also notice more responsiveness and less energy loss than in my traditional trainers. When running in these using "natural running" form, the mileage of these shoes will be somewhere around 700 verses a traditional trainer where your life expectancy of the shoe will be 400-500 miles. The high quality super breathable upper wraps the foot very nicely offering a superior fit and the bright colors help you look great whether you are winning the race or just cruising mid-pack. March 2013

Do you like to save money on great running shoes? If you are a mild to moderate over pronator the new Asics GT 1000 can help. The GT 1000 series is a update from the old GT1100 series and was built with the famous older GT 2170 in mind. The dual-density mid-sole offers stability on the medial side to help with over pronation and also features Asics GEL cushioning.  When comparing the cushioning of this model to it's bigger brother the GT 2000 and the Kayano, you will notice that while it is not as cushioned in the forefoot it does offer a lot of cushioning in the heel and gives a nice short or long day ride.  The "Trusstic" system controls movement between the forefoot and rearfoot of the shoe and provides extra stability. The open mesh design upper for breath-ability and light overlays that don't bind or rub on your runs are always a welcoming feel on the road. With a price point of $100.00 the Asics GT 1000 offers a lot for a little. Come by and test run a pair for yourself.

February 2013
Ride the Wave, the Mizuno Wave Rider 16 that is! Late 2012, Mizuno released it's most recent edition of the Wave Rider 16. If you are a neutral pronation runner this is a shoe you should check out. Mizuno uses it's exclusive Wave plate in all of their performance trainers. Taking inspiration from nature, Mizuno tunes the Wave plate to reduce impact on your foot and work in conjunction with their fairly firm AP+ midsole (compared to a Saucony or Asics for example) to offer a secure feeling contact and toe off on the tarmac.
Since there is no gel used in the Rider the weight of the shoe is kept lower than competitors models. A size 9 Rider weighs in at 10.5oz where a Brooks Ghost in the same size is 11.3oz on the Ultimate Fit weight weenie scale.  Mizuno made some nice changes in the upper using Dynamotion fit which is a semi-flexible material to give the runner a secure but not too snug feel that moves with the foot like a second skin. The stretch mesh offers nice ventilation for the long haul. If you are ready for a shoe fit made for the run by runners, the Mizuno Wave Rider 16 is your shoe.

January 2013

If you have been an Asics GT series fan at some point over the last 17 years you probably have had a favorite model, but then they brought out the new edition and it just wasn't the same. The current GT2170 has been a home run offering by the footwear giant. When I say that the new GT2000 series is the next step in the evolution of the shoe it may start your brain spinning. Have no worries, the new Asics GT2000 is different but still deep in the fit and feel you have come to expect from the GT series over the years.

In traditional Asics fashion they kept the famous exposed gel in the heel and use gel pods in the mid foot for a soft but springy feel. A new lighter "Solyte" dual density midsole and a new split guidance "Trusstic" system together give additional cushioning and help keep the shoes structural integrity with the bridge between the heel and forefoot. Asics jumped onto the lower heel to toe drop game with this model without over doing it. The 10mm difference is enough to help you get up on your mid foot a bit quicker but isn't so drastic that it will make the shoe feel completely different than past models.

Asics put the GT2000 on a diet also! An older GT2170 model weighs in on the Ultimate Fit scale at 12.2oz. The new GT2000 in the same size hits the scale at 11.6oz. The weight loss of the GT2000 helps it feel a bit more lively on all of your favorite courses. Have no fear, the new GT2000 still feels great and offers the ride you have come to expect out of Asics GT line up. So come in grab a new pair to lace up and go!

December 2012

At Ultimate Fit we are huge Brooks fans so it wasn't a surprise to us when the new Adrenaline 13's where named "Runners World" Editors’ Choice in their Dec. 2012 issue. Ultimate Fit employee and future Hason Brooks professional team runner Dustin Emerick currently runs in the new 13’s and had this to say about them. “I have run in many shoes over the years including many of the Adrenaline models. The new 13 offers all the traditional support people love but with additional cushioning. It also offers a smooth ride but still gives great road response.” If you are a over pronator and haven't tried a Brooks Adrenaline yet we suggest you "run" into the shop and check out the new 13’s they may just be the secret weapon behind Dustin’s pro career.

Are you a larger male athlete looking for a stabile motion control shoe but don't want a shoe that is too bulky? Check out New Balance's 1340 v1 motion control model. This shoe combines their "Stabilcore" (a medial stabilizing system) with great posting help to control over pronation. In addition, the New Balance "T-Beam" inset in the midsole of the shoe helps resist twisting and flexing that shoes encounter when they are in motion. The cooler fall weather brings more trails runs to our area, and trail runs mean trail shoes. Ultimate Fit welcomes the New Balance MT10 Minimus Trail shoe to our off road shoe model offerings. This is a shoe for the neutral trail runner looking for the least amount of shoe between them and the trail. If that is you then this shoe delivers. It’s light weight "7.5oz" and features a 4mm heel to toe drop that promotes a midfoot strike. The flexible  "Vibram" outsole and Acteva midsole together create a platform that allows natural movement of the foot, offers great grip and ground feel with minimal cushioning. Made to be worn with or with out socks this minimalist trail shoe is ready to take you to a heightened natural trail running experience. Are you ready ?

You are light, fast and want a shoe that is the same! Swing the spotlight to the unisex Brooks T7 Racer, a speed demon that says P.R. By putting material only where necessary and opening up the front with lots of mesh, the T7 weighs in at 6.4oz which gives it that feathery feeling. It also features a great wrap feeling around the instep of the foot that is soft both with or without socks. As with all minimalist shoes we recommend slowly building your mileage in the T7 to give your foot time to adapt to a less structured shoe. Once you take the time to build into these you will find that the Brooks T7 will perform as good as they look...and they look real good!

August 26, 2012

Today we are going to feature Asics, a monster heavy-duty company with a new light-weight, fast, natural-feel offering, the Gel-Lyte33. The Gel-Lyte is just what the name implies. It is a very light (7.8oz in the mens model) neutral shoe. The weight is achieved by using a lighter but firmer midsole than on the standard Asics trainer, but still offers great cushioning and features gel in the heel contact area of the shoe. The shoe also features a smaller heel to toe drop in the midsole that is becoming popular in many brands recently. This allows the shoe to help promote more of a midfoot strike, which helps to make you a more efficient runner by allowing your body to absorb shock better than a heel striking runner. The outsole features deep flex grooves that promote flexibility and helps give the shoe a natural feel. The seamless upper fits like a glove with no pressure points and ventilates great on those warm days.  If a more minimal running shoe has been on your mind I encourage you to check out the Asics Gel-Lyte33. It is a home "run" model from Asics.

July 23, 2012

Light stability is not for everyone, but if you are a moderate over pronator looking a bit of stability in a light package the New Balance 870v2 is for you. Looking at their popular 890v2 neutral shoe offering, New Balance wanted to achieve the same lightweight package and feel but with the addition of light posting. By using their REVlite dual density midsole, which is 30% lighter than traditional midsole foams, they were able to bring this model in at a feathery 9.8oz. It still allows for great cushion and responsiveness. The outsole of the 870v2 is also lightweight and aids in the cushioning of the shoe while providing great grip. The breathable mesh upper features bonded overlays with a very nice soft comfortable feel that your feet will love mile after mile. Lightweight, light stability and all day comfort, the New Balance 870v2 is worth taking a look at next time you are in the store!

Are you a neutral runner or walker with flat feet and need more room in your shoes? Or do you use orthotics and need the extra room to accommodate them? If so the new Brooks Dyad 7 is for you. This sturdy shoe has a wide outer sole that features 3 of Brooks Omega grooves cut into the sole to help it flex exactly where it needs to. The caterpillar crash pad allows the out sole to react like a caterpillar as it contacts the tarmac with each stride. This shoe features Brooks DNA gel technology in the midsole that instantly adapts to a runners stride and size. The BioMoGo midsole material helps to obtain just the right cushioning. Overall, this shoe feels great! The Diad is available in wide widths, has great ventilation and of course the famous Brooks fit which earns it a place on Ultimate Fit’s list of great shoes.

July 1, 2012
It's a bird, it's a plane, no it's the Brooks Ghost 5! Brooks has made some nice changes to this traditional shoe made for the neutral or supinator runner/walker. Starting with a very open mesh upper for great ventilation, it also features the use of smaller overlays for less chance of rubbing and irritation. Moving to the cushioning of the shoe, the Ghost 5 features Brooks DNA gel in the heel and forefoot areas only to help reduce weight. The rest of the cushioning is handled by the BioMoGo mid-sole that allows the shoe to be well cushioned but not to soft. On the outer sole they have added a caterpillar crash pad and moved it slightly forward which fills in the area on the lateral (outside) of the sole. This makes it a full contact outer sole that allows for a smoother transition. At Ultimate Fit we listen to our customers and can tell you by customer feedback, requests and sales the Brooks Ghost 5 is a favorite with Brooks being our #1 selling shoe line. Try a pair; the Ghost 5 won't "scare" you away!

June 18, 2012

At 11.1oz, the 14 series features a lighter weight than previous models along with a improved heel fit and independent eyelets that allow for a more customized fit. Last but not least, the Gel-Nimbus features Asics famous gel cushioning in the heel and forefoot area for a plush feel and comfortable transition to toe off. The Ultimate Fit staff is excited about the new version of this premium trainer and knows you will be to after you test run a pair!

The Saucony Progrid Ride 5 is the latest model in the line up of cushioned neutral shoes we have received from Saucony. When the Saucony factory set out to upgrade this model, they wanted to offer a lighter weight but yet ample cushioning along with a smoother transition. They came through with flying colors! The Ride 5 is lighter than it's predecessor, which was achieved by removing bulk from the midsole and upper. The new 8mm heel to toe off set offers better stability by bringing your foot closer to the ground and helps with a more efficient lower impact gait. Using HydraMax material internally, the moisture wicking performance of this shoe is excellent and also gives it a very plush feel. If you are a neutral runner, slide into the new Ride 5 for your "Ultimate Fit"!

1999? 2007? No, it's 2170 Asics GT2170! This is the latest model in the GT2000 Asics lineup now in its 17th model update. Many of you have used different versions of the GT2000 series exclusively for years and this new model represents some great updates while retaining the great fit and function you have come to expect from Asics. Weight reduction is a key factor in this shoes new feel, reducing the men’s model to 11.4oz and the women’s to 9.3oz, and it made a noticeable improvement in the feel of the shoe. This was accomplished in part by removing excessive overlays on the upper, which along with the reducing the weight helped give them a more streamline look. A new Solytec midsole also lightens up the shoe while still offering great cushioning and rebound for a lively feel. Asics has always been a fan of adding gel to obtain just the right amount of cushioning and this model is no exception. Featuring the largest gel cushioning ever used in the heel of the GT2000 series lineup. Running gel in the forefoot helps reduce impact keeping you fresher on your long runs. If your current Asics GT2160's are tired or you are just in need of a new stability shoe for over pronation, check out the new Asics GT2170! It may be your new foot weapon of choice.

As minimalist shoe sales continue to increase nationwide, I thought we would cover the Saucony Kinvara, a very popular semi-minimal shoe we are carrying at the store. If you are a neutral runner looking to make a move towards a lighter, more minimal shoe, the Kinvara is a great choice. To begin running in this model we would recommend no more than 3 or 4 days a week since the shoe has less structure than what you currently may be running in. But after a few weeks of adaptation, you can increase your time in the shoe and eventually make it your everyday choice. Weighing 7.7oz, the Kinvara is lightweight and has a very flexible ProGrid Lite midsole. The 4mm heel to toe offset keeps you close to the tarmac. Great traction and durability is provided by the XT900 carbon rubber outsole, while the upper offers moisture management materials to keep you cool and dry. The Kinvara has been the inspiration for the new 2012 Triumph, Hurricane and Guide models by reducing their bulk and heel to toe drop, and improving the overall performance of these models. Ultimate Fit co-owner Cindy Jones grabbed a pair, has been using them on her shorter 3 - 4 mile runs and loves the lightweight comfort of the shoe. She has been known to work all day in a pair of these at the store and keeps them on even longer due to the pure comfort. Stop by and ask Cindy about her experience in the Kinvara and then decide for yourself if this Saucony shoe is right for you.

Have a fun run!

May 7, 2012
Do you ever feel like you are in a trance on your runs? You do if you are wearing the Brooks Trance, Brooks premium stability platform shoe. This week we are going to talk with Trent Nolan, Ultimate Fit employee and USI runner. Trent was a huge Brooks Adrenaline fan but has recently changed to the Trance.

"Trent what was your reason for switching to the Trance"?
When I was using the Adrenaline, I seemed to go through them quickly. I decided to try the Trance to see if I could get more wear out of them. I bought a pair and after my second run I decided that it didn't matter if I got more wear out of them or not, they felt a lot better. The cushioning was much better. I believe the extra cushion helped me alleviate an on going foot problem I had been having. Along with that I did achieve my original goal of longer wear as the Trance on the average lasted 50 miles longer than the Adrenaline.
At first I was also concerned with the weight of the Trance as it is a bit heavier than the Adrenaline. I thought that it might affect my performance, but after wearing them I didn't even notice the extra weight. I did notice the extra cushioning which was more important than the weight.

"Thanks Trent"!
The Trance has all of the premium features you would expect to find in a great 11.9oz stability shoe for over pronators. It has great ventilation, plush glove like fitting upper, Brooks BioMoGo midsole featuring DNA that adapts to every runner, and a full-length caterpillar crash pad to reduce impact even more. Want to run in a Trance? Stop by and we can put you in a Trance you won't forget!

Today I want to revisit a shoe review we did back on January 30th, the Saucony Guide 5. Since the review I've had the opportunity to put some miles on a pair of these (a loud bright orange and lime pair to be exact). As much as I love my current trainers, the Guide 5 has become my new personal favorite. I enjoy everything from the unbelievable cushioning and responsiveness of the ProGrid midsole to the plush feeling of the interior. My favorite update is the 8mm heel to toe drop. Being somewhat of a heel striker myself, I immediately notice the smoother transition from heel to toe that the Guide 5 offers. I think it allows me to run quicker and more efficiently than my current shoes. If you are a mild to moderate pronator, you really need to come in a see why they were voted the 2012 Editor's Choice from Runner's World Magazine. Grab a pair to call your own and I bet they will be your new 'go-to' training shoe for a long time to come!

Our spotlight this week is on the Brooks Pure Project "Cadence" model. Brooks has struck what we believe to be the ultimate in light weight trainers with the Pure Project line, and the Cadence is no exception. Although this shoe is not as minimal as the Pure "Connect" model, the Cadence is still light weight, weighing in at 9.5oz; however this shoe offers more control and stability meant for overpronators. The upper is airy light and has a glove like fit which features the NavBand. This band runs across the instep and attaches to the midsole to help secure the fit. The midsole is made with BioMoGo technology and includes Brooks exclusive DNA cushioning, which offers a custom road feel to all different shapes and sizes of runners. The 4mm heel to toe offset, along with their Ideal Heel, promotes a more forward foot strike that helps reduce impact. The feedback from our customers running both long and short distances in the Cadence has been very postive. Having a pair myself, I would agree that this is the best lightweight shoe I have ever trained in!

Have a good run!

Introducing Saucony’s newest edition of their premier neutral shoe, the Triumph 9. We are excited about the upgrades that Saucony is offering on this very popular shoe this season starting with the new heel to toe drop. The Triumph 8 had a 12mm heel but for the 9 series they have reduced that to a 8mm heel. Reducing this by 4mm will allow you to quickly and seamlessly transition from a heel strike onto the mid foot for less impact. The midsole uses Saucony "Powergrid" and "Powerfoam" along with their SRC crash pad which has been extended from the heel into the midfoot area to offer superior cushioning for the runner. If you haven't been using a premium cushioned shoe you will immediately notice the extra “cushy” of this model. Where the shoe meets the pavement, the outsole has awesome traction and grip along with great durability. Moving to the upper, they have added "Sauc-fit" which holds your arch and helps to lock in your heel for a secure fit. This, along with the ample mesh for cooling, will help keep you comfortable during any length event. The bottom line is if you want a top of the line cushioned neutral shoe that went on a diet and lost a full once since the last version was introduced, trying the Saucony Triumph 9 may be your first step towards many running triumphs to come!

You want to make a quick trip to the store, but what shoes do you wear? Your running/walking shoes are reserved for just those activities, but you want to wear something with great support that is easy to get on and off. Spenco Polysorb sandals can save the day! A few years ago we had many customers asking for a sandal with support. After researching options, we found Spenco. Spenco is the manufacturer of the high quality insoles we carry and they have now turned their attention towards making sandals for people on the go. Years of experience helped Spenco redesign the traditional sandal with one that has an orthotic arch and heel support. The casual sandal is now comfortable supportive footwear. They are great to use before or after your fitness activities and are made for those looking to get more out of the traditional sandal fit. We're confident that once you slide these on, you won't want to take them off!

Zoot! What in the world is a Zoot?! Another great brand of footwear and apparel we stock at Ultimate Fit, of course. Born in the ranks and competition of triathlons, Zoot has made a name for themselves as THE brand for serious triathletes. Now they have made the "transition" to the run category.  The Zoot Energy 3.0 is our featured shoe this week and works for the neutral runner with a narrow to average width foot. Zoot uses their lightweight Z-bound midsole for great response, increased energy return, and comfort for long runs. The upper features a comfortable mesh slip-on closure and borrowing from their triathlon background, this model is made with "BareFit" technology. It is comfortable enough to be worn sock-less or with your favorite brand of running sock. If you're in the market to try out a new trainer, the Zoot Energy 3.0 is 8.9oz of footwear you should seriously consider!

What is in your shoe? This week we take a look at an often overlooked part of a shoe's fit, comfort, and performance: your socks. Why do you get blisters? Why is your shoe not as comfy as you'd like? It may just be your socks. Feetures is our #1 brand of sock and has several different models. Today we'll review my favorite, the Elite series. This model is available in low cut or no show length with light cushioning to absorb impact. iWick moisture management material helps keep your feet dry and eliminate blisters. My favorite feature of the sock is Feetures' exclusive Power Arch, adding support like a compression sock. There are also left and right specific features and a seamless toe, which adds to comfort. I can honestly say that this sock literally disappears in your shoe and feels like you're not wearing anything at all (in a good way!). If you've never experienced a premium running/walking sock, you owe it to yourself to try a pair. Your feet will thank you!

Look out, it's the Beast! The Brooks Beast that is! The Beast is our most popular mens' motion control road shoe and is available in regular and wide widths. As the name implies, this shoe is made for the larger runner that is an over pronator looking for a mix of stability and comfort. Our Brooks rep tells us that the Beast has been a top seller for over 10 years and we can echo that statement. We have customers that come in and ask for it by name and size and not even try it on because of the past experience they have had with this shoe.  We are sure that with the addition of full-length Brooks DNA gel to the mid sole for custom cushioning it's popularity will continue thru 2012 and beyond. Brooks builds the Beast on a straight last sole, which in combination with the strong medial posting of this shoe, helps prevent rolling. The upper is made from a breathable microfiber mesh and the overlays are strategically placed to hug the foot snugly in its position. If you are a larger runner searching for the "Ultimate Fit" in a motion control shoe, the Brooks Beast is the place to start. We are convinced your search will be over quicker than a romance on "match.com" because the Beast is the one you have been searching for all along.

Have a fun run!

With all the interest in trail running recently, this week's shoe review focuses on the Brooks Pure Grit mens and women's trail shoe. Brooks held back nothing in the design of this shoe starting with the one piece outsole that has a small 4mm heel to toe offset, allowing you to connect with the trail. Brooks added just enough lug and a concave design that spreads the outsole on impact. Still focused on the outsole, the Grit receives a wide base that gives very stable footing over trail obstacles. It also allows for toe flex by using a split, which engages the big toe and allows it to work separately to help with all-important trail balance. Brooks exclusive DNA in the BioMOGO midsole creates a springy toe off and a custom /cushy run for everyone.  As with the entire Pure line, the upper foam / mesh is very light weight and breathable, but the Grit model allows water to be dispersed for those wet conditions you may encounter.  Brooks Nav band wraps around the foot to hold the shoe in place while comfortably adjusting to feet of all shapes and sizes. As a light weight offering ( 8.9 oz mens and 7.6 oz in the women's model) this trail shoe may or may not be for you but here is what our long time customer and seasoned trail runner "Shane Thread" had to say about this shoe in his weekly blog. "Regarding gear, I have recently fallen in love with the Brooks Pure Grit Shoes I picked up at Ultimate Fit. With a 4mm drop and a cushy ride, they seem to satisfy my need for a low-heeled, low mass trail shoe. Even completely soaked they are lighter than any other shoe I've worn in trail races."  Stop by and try on your size today, you just might "fall in love too" !

Since the "Bound for the Mound" trail race is this Saturday at Angel Mounds, I thought it would be a good time to review the Brooks Adrenaline GTX trail shoe. First off, what is the difference in a true trail shoe and a road shoe ? A trail shoe has an aggressive lugged sole to grip on the rocks, wet roots, grass and mud securely. Trail shoes also need to keep your feet dry in all conditions but still need to breathe. The Adrenaline GTX accomplishes this by using Gore-Tex material in the upper that is completely water proof but allows the shoe to breathe. This along with a one piece tongue keep your foot dry and comfortable for the long haul. The Adrenaline GTX is for the runner that over pronates but Brooks features many other trail models for different types of pronation including the new Brooks "Pure Grit" lightweight trail shoe lineup.

Brooks chose the color of both the men's and women's models wisely, as all of the elements you face off road don't allow the shoes to stay pretty for long. With the dark colors Brooks chose, it helps preserve the new appearance longer. Like many models in the Brooks line up this one features their BioMoGo mid-sole for awesome cushioning and biodegradability. Brooks DNA runs the length of the sole for even more personalized cushioning with every stride no matter how you run. At 10.7oz for the women's model and 12.7 oz for the mens model they weigh just a bit more than a traditional road shoe but with the small gain in weight come features that are a must have when you are on your favorite trail. So grab some trail shoes and get out there, we have great trails here locally so there is no excuse not to give trail running a try and give your body a break from the pounding of the tarmac !

Have a fun run !

Here is a new entry from Mizuno for men and women in the neutral road category, the Enigma. The Enigma fills the gap between the Mizuno Wave Rider and Creation models (which we will be reviewing in the near future) by offering a softer ride than the other two. It has softer forefoot cushioning than the Rider and a less rigid heel due to it's design. By using Mizuno's exclusive wave plate from the toe to heel along with their AP+ midsole, it allows the shoe to be cushioned but still give a stable feel along with a springy toe off. The upper mesh is breathable to help your feet stay dry and blister free, and features Mizuno's 4-way stretch material that allows for a snug but comfortable fit. At 12.4 oz the Mizuno Enigma is a great long lasting training shoe that will keep you smiling mile after mile.

This week we feature another light weight training shoe from our lineup, the New Balance 890. We have had many positive responses from our 890 customers who enjoy the durable REVlite midsole. This includes NB's top of the line ABZORB feature, which gives these shoes great responsiveness and cushioning for short to marathon distance training runs. This 9.7oz road shoe is for the neutral runner and feels great whether you are a midfoot or heel striker. It has flat laces which help prevent discomfort and a mesh upper with plenty of ventilation and support. New Balance wanted to create a lightweight shoe, but one that is durable for everyday training. We believe they achieved their goal!

We have been anxiously awaiting the Brooks Pure Project collection to hit the door and last week our trusty UPS driver delivered the goods! The line consists of 4 different models so stay tuned and we will eventually review all of them right here on the ProRehab blog. First, we are going to take a look at the PureConnect model. If you are a neutral pronation runner looking to try out a light weight minimalist shoe, but still want some cushioning, the Connect just might be for you. To help you feel the run, Brooks has included a split groove in the forefoot of the outer sole that allows your big toe to function more independently, which creates greater push-off. Brooks also included DNA in the BioMoGo midsole that customizes to every run in this feathery 7.2oz road shoe. A trend we are seeing in 2012 is a reduction in the thickness of material in the heel of many of the new road shoe models. As usual, Brooks doesn't disappoint, and has included this new feature in the Connect allowing for a smoother transition onto the midfoot. A breathable upper mesh and sweet asthetic round out this package that is equally suited to use as a fun casual shoe or your faster racer. Are you ready?

This week's shoe pick comes from the 2012 Saucony lineup of footwear offerings. The Saucony ProGrid Guide 5 is a road use support shoe for the mild to moderate overpronator and has some exciting new upgrades this year. The weight has been reduced by 1.5oz to let the Guide 5 come in at a light 10.2oz on the Ultimate Fit scale. Don't let the weight fool you into thinking this shoe won't have good cushioning. Saucony's ProGrid "lite" midsole runs the full length of the foot bed and provides just the right cushioning for short speed runs, mid-distance tempo runs, or long distance slow runs. If you are a heel striker, reducing the offset from 12mm to 8mm allows you to transition to your mid-foot quicker and with less "clunkiness" than is normally associated with being a heel striker. If all of this isn't enough to make a believer out of you, the Guide 5 was also just awarded editors choice in the March 2012 edition of Runner's World magazine in the stability category. It received the highest marks of the 23 shoes reviewed by the publication's shoe lab, wear testers, and the editors...very cool. Stop by the store and check them out yourself, and you will become a believer.

For our first shoe review, I have chosen the latest edition of one of our most popular models, the Brooks Adrenaline 12.  This 11.03 oz road shoe falls into the support category and offers a great fit for someone that is a mild to moderate over-pronator looking for a nicely cushioned shoe that has a great feel. Features such as Brooks DNA in the midsole provide custom cushioning for runners of all types by reacting to you and your running style. The Biomogo midsole offers long lasting cushioning to every run and is now biodegradable. The newly upgraded additional moisture management mesh microfiber helps keep your feet dry and comfortable. The Brooks Adrenaline 12 is a shoe that runners can't get enough of  and it just keeps getting better with every new model.
